Newark was founded by Scots-Irish and Welsh settlers in 1694. The town received a charter from George II of Great Britain in 1758, thus officially establishing the town. Schools have played a significant role in the history of Newark. A grammar school, founded by Francis Alison in 1743, moved from New London, Pennsylvania to Newark in 1765, becoming the Newark Academy. Among the first graduates from the school included three signers of the Declaration of Independence: George Read, Thomas McKean, and James Smith. The state granted a charter to a new school in 1833, which was called Newark College. Newark Academy and Newark College joined together in following year, becoming Delaware College. The School was forced to close in 1859, but was resuscitated eleven years later under the Morill Act when it became a joint venture between the State of Delaware and the School's Board of Trustees. In 1913, pursuant to legislative Act, it came into sole ownership of the State of Delaware. -- Source: Wikipedia.com

We read this story from Delawareonline today. It seems like only a handful of people actually care about preserving this historic site, and turning it into a community resource? Wouldn’t it be nice if the people and especially the leaders in First State supported that position? I guess it’s easier to pretend it doesn’t matter. [...]

Del. offshore wind project–Bluewater Wind–apparently dead
01/17/2012

See the Bloomberg story below. There are many ironies in all this.  Not the least is that the wind project was widely supported by Delawareans in preference to a new coal burner proposed by NRG.  NRG ended up with the wind project and has now cancelled it.  Delawareans, especially downstate, turned out [...]

Text from Gov. Markell’s office on "fracking"
01/17/2012

[Comment:  Markell had been dodging and weaving on this issue for months.  There's no way he would have stalled fracking in the Delaware River basin—the DRBC meeting has been cancelled as the drilling industry doesn't have the votes right now—without a lot of effective organizing.  A key underlying problem is that fracking has been exempted [...]

Spring Hiking and Camping in Shenandoah - Final Take
01/12/2012

It has now been three weeks since my wife and I returned from our trip to Shenandoah.  I had originally planned this trip to allow for us to experience spring conditions for hiking and photography.  Since we live “up north”, in the Delaware Valley area of New York State, we were looking forward our trip [...]

Storms at Shenandoah
01/12/2012

During our camping week at Shenandoah National Park we encountered enough rain and storms to enjoy some drizzle inside our tent.  The winds were blowing at up to 35 mph with heavy rains two entire days of our stay.  In addition to the two whole days of rain, we also had light rain about half [...]

More Shenandoah “Squirrels”
01/12/2012

In my previous post I referred to white tailed deer as the squirrels of Shenandoah.  Indeed, white tails were the most common animal we saw last week, bar none.  They were pretty much everywhere - even throughout the campground.  It was mind boggling to see a herd of deer pass within 50 feet of the [...]

Like Squirrels…
01/12/2012

A few years ago, my wife, her two youngest daughters and I drove part of the way across the country to Yellowstone National Park.  This post is not so much a story about Yellowstone (a wonderful experience for all of us), but a story about “wildlife”.  In Yellowstone we encountered many animals that we do [...]

More Trilliums (trillia?)
01/12/2012

No, the plural really should be trilliums!  However, I thought it might be useful to make a comparison between the varieties I have encountered. Probably the most common in the area that we live is the red trillium (trillium erectum) in my previous post.  However, New York State also has large flowered (or white) trillium [...]

Trillium Oddity? Genetic Mutant?
01/12/2012

My last few posts have been about the colors and images of spring, as I encounter them in my rural area of the Southern Tier of New York.  In my quest for images, I try to include my photography students at The Family Foundation School, a boarding school for teens at risk.  My Monday class [...]

Spring Flowers!
01/12/2012

One of the wonderful things about spring in the Northeast are the beautiful pastel colors that emerge from the dead brown colors of late winter.  In our little area of the Catskill Foothills spring is now in full swing and the golden yellows, light greens, reds, pinks and whites of the budding trees have reached [...]

More Eagles!
01/12/2012

We have had more visits from the bald eagles at our pond in the last weeks.  This is some consolation, as our beavers have left the area and the dam has broken and the pond has been draining.  Even the ducks and geese are less ubiquitous than they were earlier in the spring when the [...]

Ricketts Glen and First Signs of Spring
01/12/2012

It’s always wonderful when the first warm days arrive, along with some early splashes of color in the yard - usually the snow crocuses when they first pop up.  This year, there were some very early days with temperatures in the seventies up here in the north east.  My step daughter was home from college [...]
